For most local businesses, the Google Business Profile brings in more calls than the website. Here is how to set it up properly and keep it working, step by step.

If you run a local business in Edmonton, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a customer sees, before your website and sometimes instead of it. It shows up in Maps and at the top of local searches, and a well kept profile regularly brings in more calls than any other channel. The good news is that it is free, and most of the work is simply doing the basics thoroughly.

How do you set up a Google Business Profile properly?

  1. Claim and verify it. Search your business name on Google or visit business.google.com. Verification may be by phone, email, video or mail.
  2. Use your real business name. Exactly as it appears on your signage and invoices. Adding keywords to the name can get a profile suspended.
  3. Choose the right primary category. This matters more than anything else on the profile. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service, then add a few secondary categories.
  4. Set your service area or address. If customers come to you, show the address. If you travel to them, set a service area covering the Edmonton neighbourhoods and nearby towns you actually serve.
  5. Add every service. List each one with a short description in plain language, the way a customer would search for it.
  6. Link to the right page. Send visitors to your most relevant service page rather than only the homepage, and keep hours, phone number and website identical to what is on your site.

What makes one profile outrank another?

Google weighs three things for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot change distance, but you can shape the other two. Relevance comes from accurate categories, services and a clear description. Prominence comes from reviews, photos, activity and how well known your business is across the web, including your website and local directories.

Why do photos and reviews matter so much?

Photos are proof. Upload real images of your work, your team, your vehicles and your space, and add new ones every month. Reviews are trust. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct review link, and reply to every review, good or bad, politely and promptly. A steady flow of recent reviews tells both Google and customers that the business is active.

A profile that looks alive gets the call. One that looks abandoned gets skipped.

What should you do every week?

  • Reply to new reviews.
  • Add a few fresh photos from recent jobs.
  • Publish a short update or offer.
  • Check that hours are correct, especially around holidays.

Fifteen minutes a week is enough to keep a profile ahead of most competitors.

How does your profile work with your website?

They support each other. Your website should carry the same name, address and phone number, have a page for each main service, and mention the areas you serve. Search engines connect the two, and customers who click through should land on a page that continues the conversation. Our guide on search for businesses that would rather be building covers the website side.
